  Engineering Core

The engineering core consists of a set of required courses taken by all BSE students. Upon completion of the core sequence, graduates will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an acceptable grasp of math, science, and engineering knowledge on which they can build more specialized proficiency and depth of understanding.
  • Demonstrate appropriate problem solving and decision making skills and ability to think analytically, critically, and ethically.
  • Demonstrate an ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences and to engage in effective interaction with others.

Most of the freshman and sophomore courses are dedicated to basic subject matter in writing, speaking, mathematics, lab sciences, and engineering fundamentals. Special emphasis is placed on cross-disciplinary work, with all BSE students required to complete courses grounding them in the basic tools and techniques of electrical, mechanical, and industrial engineering. Following this preparation, students who exhibit appropriate competency dedicate their junior and senior years to development of specialized proficiency. Prior to graduation each student must exhibit an ability to accomplish engineering design by completing a project in which small groups design, build, and test a realistic engineering system.
