MACON — Mercer University’s National Engineering Advisory Board elected Dan Nale, P.E. Ph.D., vice president for Mid-Cabin Programs at Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. as chairman on Wednesday, April 25. Nale has been a board member since 1999 and succeeds the board’s longest serving chairman, L. Donald LaTorre, who led the board for 12 years.

First-Year Students to Compete at Engineering Field Day

Professors Selected As Governor’s Teaching Fellows

MACON/ATLANTA — Two Mercer University faculty members were among 12 educators from across the state selected to participate in the prestigious Governor’s Teaching Fellows Program this summer. Donald Ekong, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the School of Engineering, and John Summerville, R.N., M.N., an assistant professor in the Georgia Baptist College of Nursing, were selected to participate in the program’s intensive summer symposium. “These appointments are a great credit to these accomplished faculty members and to the University,” said Horace Fleming, university provost.

Mercer's New Science and Engineering Building On Track for Fall Classes

MACON — Mercer University's new Science and Engineering Building has high-tech classrooms and high-tech laboratories and high-tech equipment. It's almost enough to make students believe everything in the building is "high-tech." But not quite. "Being old-fashioned as we are, the physics department requested black slate (chalk) boards," Randall Peters, chairman of the physics department, said half-jokingly. Work began on the $14 million project in December 2005. Construction has remained on track, and furniture will start going into the building about mid-April.

Engineering Students To Race ‘Dragsters’ in Design Competition

MACON — Mercer University engineering students will be pairing up to compete against their fellow students to see who can build a “rubber band dragster” that will travel the farthest without losing parts. The winners, runners-up and the pair with the most creative design will receive prizes.  The Rubber Band Dragster Mini-Design Competition requires Mercer students to build a dragster out of common office materials. Each group receives a packet prior to the competition that they must use to build and power their cars across the finish line. Each packet contains rubber bands, tape, straws, paper clips, and index cards.

Engineering Alumni Return to Mercer to Talk to Students About Careers

MACON — Fifteen Mercer University engineering alumni, representing a number of career fields, will return to campus to talk with students in the School of Engineering. More than 150 students are expected to attend the event. The Careers in Engineering Roundtable, now in its twelfth year, brings successful Mercer Engineering Alumni back to campus to speak with students about their experiences in the real world. This popular program, held in conjunction with National Engineers Week, helps students learn more about possible career paths after graduation.

Engineering Professor Named Among World's Best

MACON — The world's largest electrical engineering society has awarded a professor in Mercer University School of Engineering its highest undergraduate honor. IEEE, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, has named Clayton R. Paul as the winner of its 2007 Undergraduate Teaching Award "for sustained excellence and creativity in the preparation of instructional material and inspirational teaching of undergraduate engineering students."

Mercer Helping NASA Build a Better Robot

MACON — Dr. Philip Olivier, a professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Mercer, along with Electrical Engineering majors, senior Lauren Janelle and junior Bryan Solomon, spent 10 weeks at Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland this summer. Their job was to figure out how to control a robot being developed by NASA to explore the terrain of other plants.

STC Chapter Receives Show, Distinction Awards

MACON — Mercer University's Society for Technical Communication (STC) Chapter in the School of Engineering recently received two honors at the STC international conference in Seattle, Wash. Mercer's STC chapter received the Student Chapter of Distinction Award, the highest honor given to a student chapter in this professional society. The award is only given to one student chapter in each of the STC's two chapter size categories. The student group also received the Best of Show Award for its newsletter, "Connections," in the STC Newsletter Competition.
