Before attending Mercer University, Sam Martinez worked at Robins Air Force Base in Warner Robins, Georgia. Through his interactions with numerous engineers from varying specializations, he recognized a growing need for environmental engineers and decided to become one.
As Director of Operations at Burgess Pigment Company, a leading provider of functional anhydrous and hydrous kaolin-based products, he uses his Mercer degree every day. Martinez says the problem-solving skills that he developed as a Mercer student remain invaluable.
"In the workplace, you are not just dealing with problems in your specialization, you are working in teams. A Mercer education is extremely valuable because
you are cross-trained in other engineering specializations and you are familiar with the different sets of problems that you may encounter on a day-to-day basis," he said. The skills that Martinez learned at Mercer made him an attractive managerial candidate. "The soft-skills training that I received have helped me along the way. The team building, public speaking, and leadership skills are the tools that helped me to acquire my corporate leadership role. Problem-solving and decision-making skills are two things that employers are looking for in management, and I have those skills thanks to Mercer's School of Engineering." |
