Muzzy Jackson played first base for the Mercer baseball team, but his degree in industrial management from the School of Engineering has allowed him to make baseball his career. Jackson says while the program was challenging, the individual attention he received from his professors helped him succeed while also competing in NCAA Division I baseball.
After graduating from Mercer, Jackson went on to graduate school and received an internship with the NCAA in Kansas City, Missouri. Soon after, he was awarded a position in the front office of the Kansas City Royals. Jackson is now Vice-President of Baseball Operations and Assistant General Manager for the Royals organization and assists in the management of much of the day-to-day operations of the team.
Jackson said his industrial management degree gave him a competitive edge in his new job. "I was able to come right in and implement a variety of management systems others with traditional degrees really hadn't been exposed to. Now, I'm responsible for compliance with Major League Baseball rules and the Basic Agreement, professional scouting, a $50 million budget, and interacting with our media relations department to get the message out about
our product. I have learned how to integrate all of my skills into successfully running a first-class, professional organization." |
