Scott Waters spent his first two years of college at a large state university, but found he was getting lost in the crowd. He transferred to Mercer and thrived.
Today, he serves as Vice President of Engineering and New Product Development at American Ironhorse Motorcycle Company in Fort Worth, Texas, the world's premier custom motorcycle manufacturer. He credits his Mercer engineering degree with helping to secure his job and to succeed in it.
"Dean C. B. Gambrell called me two years after I'd graduated and said a search firm was looking for someone to fill a position with a motorcycle engine manufacturer," Waters said of the School's inaugural dean. "It meant a lot to me that Dean Gambrell thought of me when he learned of that opportunity. I doubt that would have happened if I'd graduated from another engineering school."
The School of Engineering's emphasis on communication skills were essential in Waters' first days at American Ironhorse. Those skills, combined with Mercer's emphasis on practical experience and classes focused on all areas of engineering, set Waters apart from the rest.
"Mercer is focused on what helps its students to make a difference in their careers and on the skills that engineers need to be successful," he said. "The support of the faculty and Dean Gambrell and the experience that I received through my student work and my volunteer experiences helped me to get to where I am today." |
