Richard Weekley was a member of the School of Engineering's first graduating class. "The personal culture at Mercer helped me to succeed," Weekley said. "It was one of competitive camaraderie and meshed well with my personality. We pushed each other because we all strove to be better than the crowd."

"Industry demands that you be well-rounded, and my bachelor of science degree in engineering with a mechanical engineering specialization distinguished me from someone who graduated with a bachelor of mechanical engineering," Weekley said. "Because my degree was based on a foundation of engineering courses from a variety of disciplines, I was exposed to a broad spectrum of engineering applications, which helps me now in the manufacturing environment."

Weekley now runs the product engineering department for Trane's Macon facility, and has hired a number of Mercer engineers, not because they hail from his alma mater, but because he knows they can meet the demands of the job. "Trane currently employs eight Mercer engineering graduates, and they are some of the best trained engineers we've ever had here," Weekley said. "Mercer graduates have a solid academic foundation and are well trained for what we do here. Mercer has an outstanding reputation for quality graduates within the walls of this plant."
