technical communication faculty spotlight The School of Engineering is fortunate to have top-ranked faculty in its classrooms. Bringing industry and research experience as well as excellent academic records to the School, Technical Communication faculty continue to remain current in their fields and specialties through consulting work, research, and societal involvements. We are proud of all our faculty members accomplish and are pleased to recognize the current faculty spotlight, Dr. George F. Hayhoe.
Dr. George F. Hayhoe recently returned to the School of Engineering's Technical Communication Department, following a two year absence, and brings with him two recent awards in the APEX 2006 awards recognizing Publication Excellence. APEX 2006 -- the 18th Annual Awards for Publication Excellence -- is an international competition that recognizes outstanding publications from newsletters and magazines to annual reports, brochures and Web sites. According to the APEX 2006 judges, "The awards were based on excellence in graphic design, quality of editorial content and the success of the entry in conveying the message and achieving overall communications effectiveness." Hayhoe received an Award of Excellence in the Magazines and Journals category for Technical Communication and an Award of Excellence in the Editorial and Advocacy Writing category for his November 2005 editorial "Seeing Clearly," which examined how technical communicators should respond to disasters such as Hurricane Katrina. Of his recent wins, Hayhoe says, "This is the ninth consecutive year that Technical Communication has been honored by APEX, and I'm delighted that the quality of our journal is recognized not only by the members of the Society for Technical Communication but also by the judges of this external competition. It's an honor to be included among the distinguished communication products they recognized." Hayhoe is also excited about his return to Mercer's School of Engineering as Professor of Technical Communication. "I'm really pleased to be returning to Mercer because of its superior students and collegial faculty. Nowhere at Mercer are those qualities more evident than in the School of Engineering and the TCO Department. It's great to be home again!" says Hayhoe. Hayhoe's resume includes eighteen years of experience as a technical communicator for DuPont, Westinghouse, the US Department of Energy, and NASA. A Society for Technical Communication (STC) Fellow, Hayhoe serves as editor of the STC journal Technical Communication. He is a past president of the IEEE Professional Communication Society (PCS) and a recipient of the IEEE PCS Emily K. Schlesinger Award. |
