Become a skilled information designer

Housed within Mercer University’s School of Engineering, the Bachelor of Science in Human-Centered Information Design and Technology prepares students to communicate specialized information—especially in emerging fields like artificial intelligence—with clarity, empathy, and impact.

Students learn to translate complex concepts from science, medicine, engineering, and technology into accessible content for many audiences. Through hands-on experience with digital tools and media—including instructional videos, interactive websites, AI-assisted writing technologies, and print documentation—they become fluent in both traditional and next-generation communication platforms.

Graduates are uniquely positioned to shape how the public, professionals, and stakeholders understand and interact with information delivered by evolving technologies.

Our Information Design graduates are equipped with advanced knowledge and preparation in the following areas:

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI)
  • Content Strategy
  • Digital Design
  • Instructional Design
  • Multimedia
  • Technical Writing/Editing
  • Usability
  • Web Design

MEET THE FACULTY

Mercer's Technical Communication program has enhanced my college experience in and outside of the classroom. All of my Tech Comm classes have taught me valuable skills such as efficient note taking, organization, writing, and professionalism. I can also apply these skills to my other classes. I could not be happier to be a part of a program that has helped me develop as both a student and a young technical professional.

Technical Communication Major Chloe Carter

Mercer's Technical Communication program is great due to its hands-on nature and wealth of real-world opportunities. As part of my major, I interned at Blue Bird Corporation. I helped them develop online training for technicians and sales teams. I'm also currently working there part-time, and expect to stay with them after graduation.

Evan Gambill, Technical Communication '20

Technical Communication Student Evan Gambill

The TCO degree has a required internship, and I was fortunate to get an internship working with a fellow TCO alumnus, Ryan Tuttle, at a digital agency in Atlanta called Spunlogic. Two months into the three month internship, I received a job offer for full-time employment as a project manager. My internship set the course for the rest of my career. I learned a tremendous amount in the TCO program that I was able to apply in my daily work life.

Internships

All Information Design majors are required to complete a paid, full-time internship as part of your coursework, providing meaningful experience with real companies. Our faculty members will work with you to secure an internship, and in fact, many companies contact us year after year looking for interns from our department.

Networking and Professional Development

Getting your career started is not just about what you know; it’s about who you know. That’s why we maintain connections within the industry to help our students establish fruitful connections. We stay connected with IEEE’s Professional Communication Society (PCS). We have taken students to present at the IEEE ProComm national convention both in the U.S. and abroad. These connections and networking opportunities will help you transition from your education to a rewarding career.
