Dr. Jack Mahaney

Associate Professor Emeritus, Department of Mechanical Engineering

After spending eleven years in the U.S. Navy’s Submarine Force, Dr. Jack Mahaney earned two engineering degrees at Old Dominion University. In 1985, he came to Mercer as one of the founding faculty members for a brand new engineering school. It still surprises him how quickly the 31 years passed before he retired in 2016. Currently, Dr. Mahaney teaches Statics in the fall, and mentors students and faculty alike (i.e., he tells them what he thinks whether they want to hear it or not.)

Professional Interests

My current professional interest revolves around enjoying my retirement.

Other Interests

Outside of the classroom, Dr. Mahaney has been racing sailboats for about 40 years. His current boat is a Thistle – a 17-foot boat design with a crew of three. When he’s not sailing, Dr. Mahaney is playing the bagpipe with enthusiasm if not skill, and enjoying time with his band mates in the Mercer Pipes and Drums. He also travels with his wife a bit, particularly to Barcelona and Helsinki to see their grandsons.
