Work behind the scenes—and machines—as a mechanical engineering major

What do massive airplanes, complex nuclear reactors, and the small food processor on your kitchen counter have in common? They were all designed by a mechanical engineer. Build a successful career learning to create these devices and many others as a mechanical engineering major at Mercer University.

You will dive into the fundamentals of engineering, learn basic principles, and discover how to apply them to build machines and other solutions. Then, you can use your expertise to grow a meaningful career influencing the design of products and systems that improve people’s lives.

At Mercer, you will also find challenging and exciting courses for mechanical engineering, hands-on learning opportunities, and mentorship and support from our expert faculty. When you graduate, you will be a skilled and knowledgeable mechanical engineer, ready to begin your career in the field or pursue graduate studies.

Broaden your horizons as a mechanical engineer through a related minor

Mercer offers two minors for an interdisciplinary approach to your mechanical engineering undergraduate education:

  • The Engineering for Development minor, or E4D, prepares you to design and implement sustainable solutions that benefit people and the environment.
  • The Technical Communication minor shows you how to evaluate your audience and tailor messaging accordingly—no matter how technical or complex it may be.

Your Mercer mechanical engineering undergraduate experience

At Mercer, you will take courses in mechanical engineering with experts in the field, study important subjects from statics to mechanics, and tackle challenging hands-on projects. When you graduate with your mechanical engineering undergraduate degree, you will stand out in the job market with the skills highly sought-after by today’s employers.

Hands-on learning experiences

At Mercer, you can practice your skills and techniques long before you graduate.

As a mechanical engineering major, you will have opportunities to dive into faculty-led research projects, service-learning experiences, internships, and more.

Through your courses for mechanical engineering, you will hand sketch and use leading industry software to design objects, test various mechanical components and devices, gather data, and work as a team to create realistic engineering systems.

This hands-on work will help you develop and hone the technological skill set you will need as a mechanical engineer—plus the collaboration, leadership, and communication skills employers seek.

Explore courses for mechanical engineering

Mercer offers related master’s programs within the School of Engineering, including:

I have a pretty good bit of experience with mechanical engineering outside of school. I worked my first internship at an Aluminum Extrusion company after my freshman year. I have also worked at MERC for over a year and a half. On top of this, I did research in composites and 3D printing for 2 semesters with Dr. Arash Afshar and Dr. Dorina Mihut.

Mechanical Engineering Alum Dylan Kennedy

Being an engineer at Mercer has taught me many things. Along with the material I have studied in each of my courses, I managed to learn other skills such as communication, time management, organization, and most importantly creative thinking. These are some of the skills required for any engineer to succeed in the real world.
